Conner Museum does not conduct its own research, but serves as a “library” of sorts for environmental research. We have a frozen tissue collection in addition to the traditional collection so that future researchers can use the collection for genetic studies, toxicology, and other research involving tissues. |

Conner Museum has a medium-sized collection used extensively for research. In addition, we maintain a teaching collection and loan specimens for mammalogy, ornithology, and anthropology classes. We also maintain display for the public. Our free public museum is very popular among WSU lab classes, K-12 tour groups and the general public. |

I use experimental, remote sensing, and modeling approaches to elucidate processes governing the mobilization, transport, transformation and ecosystem/biogeochemical impacts of land-based nutrients (primarily N and P). Current and past projects focus on regional nutrient and greenhouse gas dynamics in the Mexicos Yaqui Valley and in Californias Central Valley. I also work at the global scale, and have developed spatially explicit, global models of nutrient and organic matter export as part of a UNESCO-IOC-funded research project called Global Nutrient Export from Watersheds (Global NEWS). These models are now being refined and applied as part of a global effort to understand future trends in coastal nutrient loading and coastal ecosystem response (e.g. harmful algal blooms and hypoxia). In addition to these projects, I also study the role of lakes and reservoirs as hotspots for nutrient transformation and removal. |

Current area of extension-based environmental research focuses on regional impacts off-target pesticide volatilization and administration over an ambient air monitoring program for understanding human health implications of pesticide exposure. Other areas of active research include: 1) chemically assessing sublethal concentrations of pesticides in surface waters that can have neurobehavioral effects on salmonids, 2) the development of field air -sampling methods and volatilization chamber system design for assessing semiochemicals useful in codling moth mating disruption, and 3) characterizing/isolating bioactive plant volatile emissions from insect herbivory that may prove useful in enhancing conservation biological control in cropping systems. A principle responsibility of my appointment is to administer over a state-mandated food and environmental regulatory science facility that conducts studies under federal 40CFR Part 160 Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). |

My research examines the fundamental behavior of pollutants in the environment to better understand contaminant fate & transport phenomenon, while the aquatic toxicology group investigates potential exposure pathways and associated impacts on biota. Primary emphasis is placed on trace organic contaminants, including antibiotics and pharmaceuticals, polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs), pesticides and a variety of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Core project areas include sediment remediation, sustainable agricultural practices (e.g., filter strips, cropping & manure management) and water reuse. |
